I haven't been on here for a while. I've been a bit distracted. I've wanted to do this post for a while now. This post is about the incredible documentary film, Blackfish. My big sis Ja and I watched it towards the end of 2013, in December. It was both traumatizing and enlightening! It is very much a mesmerizing, psychological thriller!

When big sis Ja and I read the synopsis on Netflix, we thought we were just watching a film about ONE killer whale, Tilikum, who ended up killing a SeaWorld trainer. Instead, it ended up being a documentary about how captivity is bad for WHALES (plural) who are meant to be free in the wild, and it simultaneously demolishes SeaWorld's (mainly the one in Orlando's) reputation.

Blackfish focuses on the capitivity of Tilikum, an orca/killer whale held by SeaWorld, who's involved in the deaths of three individuals, and the dangers of keeping the species in captivity.

Director-producer Gabriela Cowperthwaite compiles shocking footage and emotional interviews to explore the creature’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity, the lives and losses of the trainers and the pressures brought to bear by the multi-billion dollar sea-park industry.
This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.

All in all, this documentary was very informing and enlightening. It mentions how killer whales/orcas have very large brains which makes them highly emotional and intelligent creatures. At the same time, it psychologically messes with your head as it tears apart SeaWorld's reputation. What you once thought was a fun, family theme-park, becomes a greedy multi-billion corporation full of cover-ups...

My big sis Ja and I went to the SeaWorld in Orlando, Florida about 6 years ago. After watching this film, we were glad that we missed the Shamu show... We were too tired after a nice day at the beach to watch the show.
This film documentary is definitely one worth seeing! It was really good! However, if you are a fan of SeaWorld, I wouldn't suggest you watch it.
Again, this is just my opinion of the film (along with my big sis Ja's).
Hope you enjoyed this post!
With love,
LaTasha B.
