A D-Xirable Poem! Maya Angelou "Still I Rise"

"Every time you judge yourself, you break your own heart."
- Unknown

If you don't know the kind of person I am,
And I don't know the kind of person you are;
Then we should LOVE one another,
And not judge each other.

Hello my wonderful and amazing loves!
I decided to do this post on one of my favorite poems, "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou. I came across it the other day and I thought that it would make a lovely addition to my blog. It's such a beautiful and inspiring poem!

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”
― Mother Teresa

“Who are you to judge the life I live?
I know I'm not perfect
-and I don't live to be-
but before you start pointing fingers...
make sure you hands are clean!”
― Bob Marley

"Still I Rise"
by Maya Angelou

Fine Artist: Greg Garner of New York City

You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may trod me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
― Dr. Seuss

"People are going to talk about you no matter what you do so I’d much rather be judged for standing out than for fitting in."
― Unknown

People will talk about you, people may even say some bad things about you, just remember to always rise when others try to bring you down! It doesn't matter what others think about you, how they feel about you, or what they say about you, just be yourself. Be true to who you are! There's no one on this planet that's exactly like you. You are unique, you are special, and more importantly, you are one of a kind! Just be true to you! People will love you for just doing that! Besides, no one knows you better than you know yourself. :)

“The truth is, everyone is going to hurt you. You just got to find the ones worth suffering for.”
― Bob Marley

Some of My D-Xirably Favorite Quotes! (Mother Teresa, Mahatma Ghandi, Dalai Lama, Buddha, MLK Jr., Hellen Keller, etc.)

“If you judge people, you have no time to love them.”
~Mother Teresa

I was an English major, so I enjoy wonderful, powerful, and thought-provoking quotes! Here are some of my favorite quotes by some of my favorite leaders and people! Many of them are by religious/spiritual leaders. What did you expect? I minored in Theology! While other quotes are from political leaders. Again, what did you expect? I was a Political Science minor as well! :) Lastly, other quotes are by major celebrities (actresses - Theatre minor of course!) and other influential people.

Misquoted as Mother Teresa (by Dr. Kent M. Keith)

"Do It Anyway"

"People are unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered.
Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives.
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Be good anyway.

Honesty and frankness will make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway.

People need help, but may attack you if you try to help them.
Help them anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God.
It was never between you and them anyway."

Mother Teresa

“I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love.”

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”

“Do not think that love in order to be genuine has to be extraordinary. What we need is to love without getting tired. Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies.”

May you use the gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us."

“The person who gives with a smile is the best giver because God loves a cheerful giver.”

“Let us not be satisfied with just giving money. Money is not enough, money can be got, but they need your hearts to love them. So, spread your love everywhere you go.”

“Life is an opportunity, benefit from it.
Life is beauty, admire it.
Life is a dream, realize it.
Life is a challenge, meet it.
Life is a duty, complete it.
Life is a game, play it.
Life is a promise, fulfill it.
Life is sorrow, overcome it.
Life is a song, sing it.
Life is a struggle, accept it.
Life is a tragedy, confront it.
Life is an adventure, dare it.

Life is too precious, do not destroy it.
Life is life, fight for it.”

“I've never dropped anyone I believed in.”

“I knew I belonged to the public and to the world, not because I was talented or even beautiful, but because I had never belonged to anything or anyone else.”

“I have feelings too. I am still human. All I want is to be loved, for myself and for my talent."

Judy Garland

"Always be a first-rate version of yourself, instead of a second-rate version of somebody else."

"I can live without money, but I cannot live without love."

These are just some of the quotes that I'm very fond of and many of them are by some of my favorite leaders. Some of these quotes are just different versions borrowed from other leaders but I LOVE them just the same. I hope that you enjoyed reading some of my favorite quotes! :)

Love always,
